THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): Benefits, Effects, Risks & Safe Use
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of the primary active compounds in cannabis and the cannabinoid most associated with its intoxicating or euphoric effects. THC interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system—a network involved in functions such as pain perception, mood, appetite, memory, sleep, and muscle control.
The effects of THC can differ substantially based on the dose, method of use, product potency, individual tolerance, and a person’s health history.
Potential therapeutic uses:
Research on cannabis and cannabinoid-based medicines suggests THC may be useful for certain symptoms and conditions, particularly when used under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional.
-
Pain management: Cannabis-based medicines may help some adults manage chronic pain, though individual results and product effects vary.
-
Nausea and vomiting: FDA-approved synthetic THC medicines, including dronabinol, may be prescribed for chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting when conventional anti-nausea treatments have not worked.
-
Appetite support: Dronabinol is also approved to support appetite in adults experiencing AIDS-related anorexia and weight loss.
-
Muscle spasticity: Cannabinoid therapies may improve patient-reported symptoms of spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis.
Possible side effects and risks:
THC is not right for everyone. Potential short-term effects include dry mouth, dizziness, drowsiness, impaired coordination, slowed reaction time, changes in memory or attention, increased heart rate, and anxiety or panic—especially at higher doses. THC can impair driving and operating machinery.
Regular or high-potency THC use may also carry a risk of cannabis use disorder. People with a personal or family history of psychosis, significant anxiety, heart conditions, pregnancy, or medication interactions should speak with a healthcare professional before using THC.
Use THC thoughtfully:
If you are considering THC for symptom relief or wellness, consult a licensed healthcare professional familiar with cannabis-based therapies. Start with a low dose, avoid mixing THC with alcohol or other impairing substances, and use only legal, tested products where permitted.
